Most transmission of HIV is through heterosexual intercourse, in the context of low condom use. Low levels of awareness may also be driving the epidemic as many people don’t see themselves as being at risk of HIV infection. An unacceptably high number of new infections are still occurring through blood transfusions, and high risk groups need to be supported with targeted prevention interventions.
