Key Drivers of the Epidemic for Botswana Key Drivers of the Epidemic for Botswana

The National operational Plan for Scaling up HIV Prevention in Botswana, 2008-2010 identifies multiple concurrent partnerships as one of the key drivers of HIV transmission, in the context of low male circumcision and relatively low condom use. Campaigns need to address curbing MCP, and increasing condom use in these relationships. Other drivers are early age at sexual debut, with some reports of children being sexually active as early as 10 years old. This is compounded by the fact that many parents and guardians in Botswana still fail to talk openly about sex and HIV with their children.
