Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission
The number of PMTCT sites reached 386 by December 2007, and PMTCT has been integrated with ANC care – more than half ANC sites now offer PMTCT. It will be vital to build on these gains ensuring wider access to quality PMTCT.
Awareness and Behaviour Change
Information on behavior is dated. The DHS 2003 showed in young people 39% of males and 25% of females correctly identified two ways to prevent HIV sexual transmission. Sex before age 15 worryingly high at 27.6% for both sexes. In the age group 15-49 years, 30% of men have had sexual intercourse with more than one partner. Only 17% of these reported using a condom. In 2009 a population-based serobehavioural survey will be carried out that will give essential information on changes in behavioural factors.
Prevention: What is Being Done?
Government planning:
- Response driven by the National Strategy and the National Council to Combat AIDS.
- Second National Strategic Plan 2005-2009 aims to increase prevention (target of reducing the number of daily new infections from 500 (2005) to 150 by 2010).
